  1. Brandenburger Tor

The Brandenburg Gate symbolizes today the unified Germany. Originally the gate was constructed between 1778 and 1791 and is the only of 18 city gates that still exists. The design was inspired by Greek mythology. In 1794 the quadriga was placed on top of the gate. Napoleon ordered the bronze to be taken to Paris during the French occupation of Berlin. After Napoleon's loss at Waterloo it was returned to Berlin. The construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 cut the Brandenburg Gate off from West Berlin. On june 12th 1987 US president Ronald Reagan held his famous "Tear this wall down" speech right in front of the Brandenburg gate.

The fall of the Berlin wall in 1989 opened the gate and re-united East and West Germany.
